M1 MacBook Pro: unboxing & first impression

M1 MacBook Pro unboxing & honest first impression

Why we got the M1 MacBook Pro

As our team grows, we have to get more equipment. We’ve added the 2020 M1 MacBook Pro (with 8GB unified memory and 512GB SSD) to our devices. We doubt any productivity apps would need more power. There is a trend amongst new apps to only support the M1 MacBook Pros. We’ve seen that with Nebo and a few other apps.

What’s in the box?

The box comes with the M1 MacBook Pro, some documentation and a 61W USB-C power adapter. The packaging is simple and minimalist.

First impressions

  • The M1 MacBook Pro is impressively thin.
  • It has 2 USB-C ports on the left edge. We were expecting more USB-C ports on the MacBook Pro. What’s Apple’s excuse for putting only 2 USB-C ports on a device this powerful? Coming from a 2015 MacBook Pro (which I love very much), this is a huge disappointment. We’ll need to buy hubs to connect our equipment to this MacBook. The thin design is no longer that impressive.
  • The other side has a 3.5mm earphone jack only, no ports. There I was, wanting 4 USB ports on each side.
  • The big trackpad is very noticeable. Like every other Apple product, this is a beautiful machine.
  • The touch bar is exciting to have, but it feels a bit misplaced. It is too far to be useful. A better design would be to put it next to the trackpad (on the left for right-handed people and right for the left-handed). The engineering of such a setup could be difficult though.
